La Noire Open-Ended Question.?

Is L.A Noire Open ended? By this i mean, after you do the last story case,do you get to explore la? If not, how do I go back to find collectibles? Or do unassigned cases, would I have to go into a random case, and just not do the case, would this let me find landmarks and stuff?
