Why REALLY do people become freemason's?

This is question that has been on my mind for a long time, why would someone become a freemason, If it is a religion why don't they tell the world about it like other religion's?, why do they hold secret ceremonies and have secret symbols and brainwash people. And most importantly, why would they accept it if they know they will go to HELL??
