What does it mean to provide context when explicating a quote?

Providing context means to give some information about the setting in which the quote occured--some background information on what surrounded it, on what came before and after the quote. People need some context to help them understand the author's original intent. Quotes given with no context at all may completely misrepresent what the author was originally trying to say.
