Segregation, racism, supreme court cases.. HELP(:?
Plessy v. Ferguson was a Supreme Court Case many many years before Brown v. Board which found that seperate facilities are constitutional so long as they are equal. (That case centered around black and whites -only train cars). Brown v. Board (in the 1950's) found that "seperate facilities are inherently unequal." Because of this, the Supreme Court said that it was illegal to make public schools segregated for blacks and whites. This mattered in Little Rock because the racist citizens of Little Rock still believed that the Plessy v. Ferguson case was the case that should be recognized and upheld and that Brown v. Board was simply wrong. However, the Supreme Court had overturned Plessy with their Brown v. Board ruling, therefore segregation in schools was illegal. When the people of Little Rock barred the entrance to the school for the Little Rock 9 kids, President Eisenhower sent in the army to enforce the law and the result was that the Little Rock 9 could go to school. Over time tensions would ease, but the memories of the rebellion during the Civil war was on the minds of many Americans when they saw the angry white citizens of Little Rock staring down the Federal troops.
